Multi-storey Madness
Project type
Surreal Portraiture
Date
August '24
Location
Truro
"Multi-storey Madness" is a raw exploration of the claustrophobic and often chaotic experience of mental health struggles within urban spaces. Set in the harsh, confined space of a stairwell, the project captures a stark contrast between structure and disorder. The yellow railings and rigid lines of the stairwell evoke a sense of imposed order, while the blurred, faceless figures seem to be at odds with their surroundings, caught in moments of internal unrest.
The image taps into the suffocating feeling of being trapped within one’s mind, mirroring the way city environments can exacerbate feelings of isolation, anxiety, or madness. The figures appear ghost-like, as though fading into the walls, dissolving in their own mental battles, with one seemingly caught in an agonizing moment of distress. The angles and lighting create a mood of both stark reality and disconnection, adding to the surreal feeling of instability.
"Multi-storey Madness" serves as a metaphor for the invisible struggles many face while moving through the cold, structured environments of modern life. It invites viewers to consider how easily the chaos of mental unrest can be hidden within the mundane, where beneath the surface, order and madness coexist in a fragile balance. The project challenges the viewer to see the humanity that often goes unnoticed in the unfeeling corners of urban spaces.
