Location

Dead Man's Hut, Portreath

'Dead Man's Hut' is an immersive and haunting photographic series exploring themes of entrapment, despair, and psychological turmoil. Shot within the claustrophobic confines of an eerie, crumbling stone structure (named Dead Man's Hut in Portreath), each image serves as a powerful metaphor for the inner prisons of the mind.

The dim, distorted figures suggest a loss of identity, consumed by isolation and fear. Shadows stretch and blur, further abstracting the human form, as if the subjects themselves are dissolving into the architecture. The cold blue hues evoke emotional numbness and suffocation, while the contrasting red tones represent raw, visceral pain, anger, or panic, forcing the viewer into a palpable sense of dread and urgency.

This series offers a direct and unsettling glimpse into the experience of mental illness, using light, colour, and disorienting angles to mirror the dislocation and confinement felt by those trapped in their own psyche. The barred window in several shots serves as a recurring motif of inescapability, heightening the tension between the desire to break free and the overpowering sense of entrapment.

Inspired by personal experience and broader emotional landscapes, 'Dead Man’s Hut' provides a space for confronting and confiding these intense feelings, offering empathy to those who may relate to its dark and intimate narrative.
